The Lakers GM Julius Suchy Announced a trade with a familiar trading partner, the Utah Jazz.
Overall the Lakers hoped to add some inside scoring as they felt playing Richard Jefferson at the #4 was not the solution to their success problems. Jefferson's value was rather high as his contract is expiring this year and he is coming off a year in which he avg'd 15.7 ppg and nearly 8 rpg.
This was was accomplished by aquring 23 year old Sheldon Williams who is currently listed at C, but will move to PF to start the season. Williams put up 11.7 ppg while hauling in over 10 rpg and blocking 2.5 shots a game. Lakers management feels that Williams can join Bynum in creating an excellent front court that can be counted on to go for nearly 30 ppg, 20+ rpg and 5+ bpg.
Also coming to the Lakers are 24 yr old SF Deron Washington and 26 yr old SG J.J. Redick. Both will serve in backup roles but management is excited at the prospect of adding a 3 point shooter of Redick's capability while also adding the versatility of Washington.
Departing the Lakers was Richard Jefferson who enjoyed moderate levels of sucess while in L.A, but ultimately he was the #4 option on a team full of stars, something he felt needed to change. Longtime Laker Luke Walton was also shipped in the deal, he is a reserve that management will miss as he had the ability to come in and pick the team up on any given night with a timely 3 pointer or hustle play.
The Lakers are now nearly $3 million under the hard cap with 1-2 roster spots left to fill out before the season begins. This season should prove interesting as the Lakers weill begin negotiations to resign Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant and also Jarvis Crittenton.
