I looked at all of the 1st round picks assuming that the second rounders aren't playing much. Put them in three categories.
1-ROY candidate which I ranked in order
2-Second tier guys. They are bringing good play to their team but probably wont win ROY, these are in draft order
3-Guys with no shot at ROY, mainly guys that are just not playing much yet. These are in draft order.
#7. Wizards - SG Gerald Henderson Jr., Duke - Gerald blossomed in training camp and has taken over the Wizards in his first year. His 30 points a game makes him a leader for ROY. Add in his 7 boards a game from the SG spot and his 47% shooting percentage and he is not only a candidate for ROY but for the All Star game.
#5. Hawks - C Andrew Ogilvy, Vanderbilt - making a great 1-2 punch for the Hawks with Bosh. Already averaging 24.8 points and 11 boards and 2.7 blocks. Add in a 44% shooting and this kid is big for the Hawks. So far, very worthy of the #5 pick.
#8. Cavaliers- PF Patrick Patterson, Kentucky- at just 6'9" he has stepped in to play center for the Cavs and has been huge. 18 points to go with 12 boards and a 3.5 blocks is what King LeBron needed from an inside presence. He is not the 1st or 2nd scoring option but eventually he may be.
1. Pistons - SF Al-Farouq Aminu, Wake Forest - his ratings are off the charts and his performance is pretty good but not good enough for ROY lead. 20 points, 8 boards, 4 assists and 1.6 steals does make him look like Kevin Durant #2 in fact his current numbers are scary close to Durant (20, 7.5, 4.7, 1.9). This kid may still win the award at the end of the day but right now his a bit behind our leader. I put him a bit lower because his is in a very high powered offense which I think accounts for a few of his points plus he gets a lot of shots with his team.
#2. Nets - PG/SG Jrue Holliday, UCLA - playing a bit of SG and PG he is doing a bit of everything. 15 points a game as the #3 scoring option, 5 boards, 4 assists. His defense has been pretty good and he has 1.5 steals a game. Low turnovers and a great shooting percent 45, 96, 47 (field, FT, 3P). If he brings his scoring up a bit and Gerald stumbles then this kid may still win it as he is playing all around good ball.
#6. Bucks - C B.J. Mullens, Ohio State - not doing as well as some of the other big man drafted around him. 15/10 is pretty good for a guy playing 30+ minutes. His 3 blocks a game is also nice but his 38% shooting is not great. I still like his game and maybe as the Bucks get better he will get better looks and raise his stats.
#4. Timberwolves - PF Blake Griffin, Oklahoma - I almost put him in the second tier till I realized that he is shooting 47% from the field and his specialty is defense. Jefferson, Foye and Lofton are the top 3 scorers so the 12 points and 8 boards is probably all they need. In the next few sims we will see if his a ROY candidate or second tier.
Second Tier, probably wont win ROY but should play in the rookie game
#3. Magic - SF Danilo Gallinari, Italy- in 16 minutes he is scoring 7.6 points which is pretty good. But for a #3 pick I would expect more time. Given time I think he could make a run for ROY but for now these are not very highlight reel stats.
#9. Magic - SF Victor Claver, Spain - in 20 minutes he is not doing much but filling time. 8 points a game shows some of his offensive skills but his 36% shooting is not impressing anyone. So far as a #9 pick I would expect more especially on a rebuilding team that values his type of player.
#10. Suns - C Marreese Speights - I expect Marreese to move up before the end of the year but for now 12 points and 11 boards is not huge. His 2.9 blocks a game is very good as defense was his forte in college but his 36% shooting is terrible.
#11. Magic - PF J.J. Hickson, North Carolina State - not playing much and not doing much so far. His 1.4 blocks in 19 minutes a game prove his ability to play interior defense so if the Magic ever put value on that then he may get to start and be a 12/10 guy with 3 blocks a game which would be pretty good.
#12. Clippers - SG Russell Westbrook, UCLA - at 33 minutes a game his numbers are very ordinary. 11 points a game but at least he shoots a decent percent and gets 1.5 steals. The Clips are scoring only 92 a game so a big time scorer would have helped more then Russell.
#13. Warriors - SF Earl Clark - in a run and gun high powered offense I would expect someone his skills to be scoring more then 12 points a game. I realize that he is the 5th option but still when you are scoring a 107 points a game there must be some shots for him. His other numbers are where they should be. So far a very solid draft pick.
#16. Bulls- C, Josh Heytvelt, Gonzaga - similar to Jason Bennet but a bit better. Basically a 10/10 guy with good amount of blocks and steals. He needs to increase his shooting percentage to start challenging for ROY.
#25. Wizards - PF Wayne Chism, Tennessee - 12 points and 9 boards is solid for a first year guy. His 1.9 turnovers a game is not great considering he doesn't touch the ball much and his defense needs some work.
No Consideration for ROY
#15. Knicks - SG Nick Calathes - backing up Caron Butler.
#17. Hawks - SF, Damion James, University of Texas - backing up Marvin Williams.
#18. Knicks - PG Matias Nocedal, Argentina - backing up Jameer Nelson.
#19. Rockets - C Jason Bennett, Kansas State- unlike most of the guys on this bottom list Jason is actually playing but 8 points and and 36% shooting show his issues. Not sure this guy will ever be great so I put him down here. Even his 1.4 blocks is bad for a 7'3" guy playing 35 minutes.
#20. Nets (from Kings) - C JaVale McGee, Nevada- backing up Sean Williams and not doing much but blocking shots.
#21. Grizzzlies - PG Johnny Flynn, Syracuse - backing up Mike Conley Jr.
#22. 76ers - PG Ramar Smith, Tennessee - backing up Dominic James
#23. Suns (from Jazz) - PG Andrew Steele, Alabama - backing up Marcus Williams and Barbosa
#24. Wizards - PF Donte Greene, Syracuse - not playing much and not doing much. Even though he was picked later, Chism his rookie team mate seems to be the man for now.
#26. Celtics - SF Alonzo Gee, Alabama - back up Paul Pierce
#27. Bobcats - SF J.P. Prince, Tennessee - just backing up Derrick Rose
#29. Trail Blazers - PG Derrick Jasper, Kentucky- for now just backing up Augustine
