Here's a game by game analysis of the Kings-Grizzlies series in the 1st round of the playoffs.
The Kings won 3 of 4 during the regular season.
Game 1 - This game was very hard-fought the entire second half. It went into overtime and the Grizzlies outlasted the Kings. Hawes put up a triple-double and Melo scored 38 points, and we lost...ouch
So let's break down a few stats:
FG% - Big advantage Kings, 42.4 to 34.3
3pt% - Big advantage Kings, 55% to 17%
FT% - Advantage Kings - 87.0 to 76.2
FT attempts - Big advantage Grizzlies - 42 to 23
Rebounds - slight advantage Grizzlies - 68 to 66
Turnovers - Huge advantage Grizzlies - 23 to 9
Blocks - Huge advantage Kings - 16 to 3
Lessons for the rest of the series? TAKE CARE OF THE BALL. DON'T FOUL SO DAMN MUCH.
Game 2 - The Kings caused more turnovers and took care of the ball much better. They shot better, and they didn't put Memphis to the line a ridiculous number of times like they did in Game 1. The Kings also held a rebounding advantage. That said, there were times where the Kings couldn't get any kind of flow offensively. The Grizzlies fought hard the entire game, and there was never any comfort zone.
Game 3 - This time the Kings took their home court advantage and ran away with it in the first half. The Grizzlies cut the Kings' lead from 19 to 9 in the 3rd quarter, but went cold in the 4th. The Grizzlies were sloppy on the road, committing 19 turnovers. The Kings actually only put the Grizzlies to the line only 13 times. It didn't hurt that Melo put up 41 points, 6 players in double figures, and Jamaal Magloire had a double-double.
Game 4 - The Grizzlies cleaned up the turnovers in a big way, but the Kings were the aggressors in this game. They got to the line 37 times, and had a big rebounding advantage. Carmelo put up 40 points, and Jason Kidd had a triple-double.
Game 5 - The Grizzlies toughened up back home with a rebounding advantage and only 9 turnovers. The Kings answered by committing only 7 turnovers. On a day when Carmelo Anthony had a miserable shooting performance, Spencer Hawes stepped up and was all over the floor. 28 points, 17 rebounds, and 9 blocks...what an animal. Basically the Kings jumped all over the Grizzlies in the first quarter and fought to hold onto it the rest of the way.
To sum it up, the Kings learned from their mistakes in Game 1, and they were able to minimize everything that Memphis cleaned up in the following games.
