The Philadelphia Sixers went in to the draft for the first time in a situation where we didn't NEED a player. We were drafting for depth and truly looking for the best available at the spots we held. Due to the resurgence of the team, we were towards the bottom of the draft board and hopefully found some usable talent.
With the 22nd pick in the draft, the Sixers selected Ramar Smith, a point guard from the University of Tennesses. We lacked a solid backup PG on this team last year and this year will trot out a nice young tandem in Dom James and Ramar Smith. Ball handling is Ramar's specialty so we'll be looking for some highlight reel dishes. He sports a solid inside game for a point guard which was a draw to our team. This low in the first round, I think we were able to pick up a talented young man to fill a roster spot.
Ramar Smith
Inside Scoring: B (***)
Outside Scoring: C (*)
Handling: A- (****)
Defense: B (**)
Rebounding: C (**)
Potential: A (****)
Entering the 2nd round, we had 2 picks...the Cavs and Sixers. The Sixers picks was dealt to Kings for a future 2nd rounder.
With the 9th pick in the 2nd round, we grabbed the USC big man Taj Gibson. With losing Ty Thomas in free agency in a gamble by management, we needed some depth in the front court. Gibson shows a pretty good base to build on with skills slightly above average across the board. He has an outside presence but has some work to do on his inside game. We like his defense and rebounding for this team.
Taj Gibson
Inside Scoring: C+ (*)
Outside Scoring: B (***)
Handling: C (**)
Defense: B (***)
Rebounding: B (***)
Potential: B (**)
We didn't get stars in this draft, but we're hoping we found 1 or 2 usable grinders to help play some minutes and spot our starters. Ramar Smith has some legit potential at point guard and we were lucky to land that talent in this draft.
