The last three years have not been great in Nets country. We tried having a balanced team without much star power. The team had great depth but was inept at scoring enough points to keep up with anyone. This lead to a massive rebuilding where promising youngsters Ronald Steele and Brook Lopez were traded to bring in a super star. After much deliberation during training camp the Nets have decided on the starting lineup for 2010. The focus is defense with the scoring mainly coming from our super star and then supported by our balanced lineup.
Gilbert has been brought in to do two things, score from the inside and score from the outside. He is the first legit 30 point threat that the Nets have had in the last few years and single handedly he is asked to turn the offense around. Now since defense is our new mantra he will be asked to continue his great defense and off course as a PG he will be asked to handle the rock but Gilbert is being measured first and foremost on scoring.
After being the #2 draft pick in 2010 draft, Jrue will be asked to step in right away. He is not expected to score right away but we are excited about the defensive presence that he showed during training camp and his ability to handle the rock for a 2 guard. We realize that he may be a bit undersized but we hope his quickness will make up for that.
We don't even want to call him a small forward as Kelenna runs the floor and handles the ball like a shooting guard. At 6'5" he may be undersized but he is very strong and at 220lbs can bang with bigger guys. He scored 18.5 PPG last year so we think he is a great option as a #2 or #3 but his 7 rebounds and 1.8 steals a game is what we are most excited about. When we originally traded for him we had no clue who he was but Kelenna won a starting job early in NJ and never looked back.
Last year Channing was the bright spot on a cloudy year. He was asked to play out of position at center, be the #1 scoring option, the rebounder on the team and the shot blocker. He did it all but he was definitely over whelmed at times. This year with the team being small at the SG and SG2 spot we will be going big inside so Channing slides back into his natural PF role. He will still be asked to score but hopefully we won't need 21.5 points from him and off course the team mantra is defense so we will continue to ask him to block shots.
With Gilbert, Jrue, Kelenna and Frye we think we have 4 guys that can score and defend but we needed an anchor. The job came down to JaVale McGee and Sean Williams. Sean has proven that he is a capable defender but is still working on his offensive game. JaVale looks like he may be as good a defender but he is a bit bigger then Sean and his offensive game may be one step ahead. For now JaVale gets the call with his job being to block shots and not turn the ball over. If he can't do that then Sean will get his first shot to start.
There is the starting 5, I think the theme is that everyone can defend and now with Gilbert in town we finally have a true scorer. The bench is very strong with Sean Williams, Klye Weaver and Antawn Jamison leading the pack. Kritic and Antoine Wrigth may also see some playing time but the team will keep its starters in as much as possible since the first 5 seem to be the team's strength.
Prediction for the year: Not sure that Jrue and JaValle are ready to start and carry a team that was the second worst all the way to first but the team is capable and should challenge for a playoff spot.
