Even though he isn't a star and he isn't a scorer, Rajon Rondo is a key part of the Celtics team. With Garnett, Pierce, and Allen being responsible for most of the scoring, Rondo steps up his game in the areas he can most help the Celtics.
Ratings analysis:
With his inside scoring rating higher than his outside scoring rating, and neither of them being that great, it does cause some problems for the Celtics. Garnett draws attention and him kicking it out to Rondo isn't exactly a huge concern for teams. They can focus on Ray Allen on the outside and keep Pierce from slashing and they'll usually be fine.
Rondo can cause problems with his quickness, getting into the lane and finishing pretty well. However, he is an excellent distributor, and that's exactly what the Celtics need to complement Pierce, Garnett, and Allen.
Defensively, he's upper-tier. At only 22, he could soon be giving starting point guards around the league major problems.
Overall, he's shaping up to be similar to Jason Kidd, but stronger inside and without as good of an outside shot. That's really high praise for this youngster.
2007 analysis:
He played 33.9 minutes per game. The Celtics had a good backup in Smush Parker, but with Rondo's talent, the Celtics might be better off playing Rondo a bit more.
He scored 12.4 points per game, which is a little surprising with the other good offensive options, but Rondo gets some fast break opportunities because of his D and he can help out.
He had 7.5 assists per game. I'd expect that to be higher with Boston's offensive options and with Rondo's ability.
He shot just 43% from the field, 32.5% from 3pt line, and 65% from the free throw line.
Last season he was player of the game 7 times on a team with three stars. He had 13 double-doubles and 2 triple-doubles.
The future:
For Rondo, only 22 years old, with A potential, the sky is the limit. He could be a defensive stopper and amazing distributer and 20 point scorer. If the Celtics GM is active and pushes Rondo further with ATC's, he could be the X-factor that takes the Celtics to the next level of consistent Eastern Conference finals appearances.
