Since Azubuike already got some attention, I decided to focus on a different 25 year old Net player that makes some noise. Frye gets by a little quieter than he might elsewhere because Jermaine O'Neal takes some of the spotlight and defensive attention away in the key.
New Jersey is 6-3 and they have a very strong complete team. Frye putting up some points as their post, playing strong D, and rebounding will take the Nets pretty far.
Ratings analysis:
B+ inside scoring can mean anything from 12 to 20 points depending on the offense. Channing is at 15.4 ppg and he really isn't playing that many minutes. His FG% is under .500. It just indicates that he either needs more like 35 minutes to stay in the flow of things more or maybe his lack of size is hurting him in the middle and he's getting outmatched. I tend to go with the latter.
He has A- defense and B+ rebounding, which should mean that he plays a fairly strong center. 7.7 rebounds per game is a bit disappointing. His block numbers are nothing special. Again, it sort of points to an issue with strength.
The best case I see for him is a soft center with a little outside touch like Brad Miller without the passing ability.
2007 analysis:
19 points per game in not even 30 minutes? That had to be an inside-oriented offense with Frye as a main option. I don't think Frye has that kind of talent really. You can actually see the lack of strength manifest itself in his 2007 stats, only 8 rebounds per game and his FG% was only .460. He's not dominating the inside. If he gets touches, he can put up points, but doesn't that kind of go for anyone?
The future:
Frye is 25 years old, with B potential. I actually think his future needs to be power forward or even small forward. I don't think he's going to work at center long-term. I suppose that ATC work for strength, jumping would improve his inside scoring, defense, and rebounding. New Jersey could go that way and turn Frye into a pretty useful player and a piece to build around.
