The Magic have just shaken things up with a major trade, acquiring Michael Redd and JJ Redick. This creates a logjam at SF of Redd, Rashard Lewis, and Bargnani. One way to go would be to spread them out, playing Redd at SG and Bargnani at PF perhaps.
Bargnani has put up 16.1 ppg and 8.6 rpg, but his role may change and he not be asked to look for his shot at much. Certainly Redd and Lewis are both dynamic scorers capable of 20 points a game. Bargnani is a good offensive player, but nobody is asking him to put up that many points at this point.
Ratings analysis:
B- inside scoring with A- outside scoring is a solid build for a small forward. If he's asked to move to power forward, that might be a little awkward. At 6'11, 240 lbs, he probably has the size and athleticism to play either position.
B- defense and B rebounding indicates a couple of areas that Bargnani really needs to improve in as he develops more. If he moved to power forward, I think those would be magnified even more. He is actually rebounding quite well on the season, but his grade indicates that he could be much better.
One grade that I don't usually touch on too much is potential. Bargnani still has A potential. Judging from my limited experience, Bargnani could get enough mileage out of that to just barely reach All-Star potential. That's really the best case for him, but I don't see him being a consistent top 10 player ever.
For a comparison, I'm blinded by the European connection, so I'll just say he's like Dirk Nowitzki without Dirk's years of work on defense and rebounding.
2007 analysis:
With a lot of minutes last year (36), he scored over 17 points a game and put up 7 boards a game. He shot just 43.5% from the field and 35% from the 3-pt line.
The future:
Bargnani seems to have shown an improved shot, as he has upped his shooting percentages. He's rebounding better as well this year. However, Bargnani needs to develop a little more scoring ability to become a 20 ppg threat. To reach All-Star level, he needs some serious help on his defense. Some of that may come from natural development as his potential is still high, but I think it'd be a wise idea for Orlando to put some training camp work into him. Also, Bargnani may actually be the most valuable piece in the SF logjam so keep your eyes peeled to see if someone makes Orlando a major deal for him that is too attractive to turn down.
