The roles are clear. Gilbert Arenas is the star, and Jamison and Butler have to provide the 2nd and 3rd scoring options well enough to give Arenas the chance to win a few games. The Wizards are 26-20 so the plan is working fairly well.
Butler has a lot of experience, but he is only 27 so he's a good piece that'll take the Wizards past just the short term.
He's scoring 17.5 ppg and shooting a deadly 44.4% from the 3-pt line. He isn't the greatest defensive player, which is one area that the Wizards appear to be fairly weak in as a team.
Ratings analysis:
Butler has B+ inside scoring and A- outside scoring. For such grades, he sure does light it up with good shooting percentages from outside. He is a very very good #2 or #3 option, and on some weaker teams, it wouldn't be crazy to see him scoring 20 points as the #1 option. I'd expect to see his percentages drop in that case though.
C+ handling is fairly solid for a shooting guard. He's not expected to handle it much with Arenas around, but he does contribute positively.
B defense is Butler's weak area that should cause the Wizards coaches the most concern.
B- rebounding is a bonus for a SG, and it shows up in his pretty solid rebounding numbers.
Butler has been around long enough that it doesn't seem right to compare him to another player of similar age. He's Caron Butler, that's just gonna have to be good enough.
2007 analysis:
With relatively low playing time (just under 32 minutes per game), he averaged 16.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg, and 3.6 apg. He shot an impressive 46.3% from the 3-pt line, and just 44.0% overall. He's an excellent free throw shooter.
The future:
Butler's contract is running out this offseason, but he's in a much more stable situation that most player. Shooting guard and small forward probably have more turnaround in personell than other positions, but if Washington wants to stay competitive, they'll probably find a way to lock up Butler for the next 4-5 years. It's possible they could tank a bit and pick up a player that could be better than Butler. I would be a little unsure of that happening, and I'd take the sure-thing money #2 option in Butler.
