Not much should be going on in Nets town this year so I figured I would write about the one guy that should have a very positive season in New Jersey. He is 26 year old center Channing Frye. Channing is only 6'11" 237 lbs so he has been told he is too small at center but my strategy with him has been two fold.
1 - I don't have a dominant center so why not use a guy that may cause foul trouble for others as he shoots from mid range and long range.
2 - Blocked shots may be a bit over rated so why not just play straight up defense which Channing can do.
Day 1 (at Cavs) - against an older but much bigger Zydrunas Ilgauskas, we get a chance to test our theory. Frye out quicks Ilgauskas and gets him in foul trouble as he goes to the line 11 times and scores 32 points. No blocked shots but he holds the opposing center to 10 points and wins player of the game.
Day 2 (Celtics) - the Celtics are not known for their centers but Garnett is always lurking. Frye does shoot 7 for 14 but only scores 15 points. He does grab 16 boards and even blocks two shots so I guess more of a typical center game but not a typcial Frye game.
Day 4 (at Nuggets) - here comes Camby the first great defensive center and he is quick one so Frye should have plenty of trouble. 6 for 16 shooting is not good but Frye does go 11 times to the line and ends with 19 points. Camby gets 4 blocks but is in foul trouble limiting him to 4 poitns so Frye has done half his job.
Day 5 (at Kings) - here comes the big Hawes. This is the typical center that we hope Frye can beat with speed instead of power. Surprisingly Hawes scores a bunch of points but Frye also scores 32 and goes to the line 11 times. Another half win as Frye performs on offense but not defense.
Day 7 (at Wizards) - Brad Miller is another aging one but he is a fine center. Frye has his most dominant outing. He scores 30 on Brad including another 12 trips to the line and holds Miller to 4 points but Miller is the first guy to not pick up 5 or more fouls.
Day 8 (Suns) - Stoudemire is probably an impossible match up as he is just as fast but much stronger and a better leaper. Amare scores 26 and does not get in foul trouble which is probably bad news for Frye. And it is, Frye has his worst game as he is the one in foul trouble. 5 for 13 shooting ends a bad day.
Day 11 (Mavs) - no great centers here so Frye should perform. Frye comes up with 20 points 10 boards and 4 blocks as the Mavs are blown out. Another player of the game award.
Day 13 (at Bobcats) - similar to Amare, Okafor is in a different league and has the tools to neutralize Frye. Surprisingly Frye and Okafors score the same number of points, have the same number of blocks and Frye grabs 6 more boards. But Okafor only played 12 minutes so it is quite a bit more impressive. Frye got him in foul trouble early but the Bobcats were still too much.
Day 15 (Wizards) - here comes Brad Miller again. Brad does score 19 this time around but Frye still gets the better of him scoring 20 on efficient shooting 11 trips to the line. Plus he gets 3 blocks as Brad's legs are getting old.
Day 19 (Lakers) - here come the athletic but over excited kid centers of the Lakers. Bynum picks up 6 fouls in just 11 minutes and Gasol picks up 6 more. Frye makes good on 8 of 12 free throws and scores 25 as he only picks up one foul.
After two sims the plan seems to be working. Outside of Amare nobody has dominated Frye and he has been in the driver's seat in most of his match ups.
More to come.
