Free Agents 2010
By Ibrina DaNews
Some big shake ups happened on day one of free agency... Some teams really stepped up while others were mum. The biggest move probably had to come from the Detroit Pistons.
I interview pre-free agency Maury Garvey and asked him what was his next step in his plan for the Pistons.
Garvey said "Well i love the direction with the young kids on this team... What we need now is a true scoring presence down low where some of our younger kids can learn from for a year or maybe two."
I asked him if he could give us any hints on who hes going after.
"Well we would love to bring in a true leader big man type guy and we have our eyes on a few of the key big man in free agency." said Garvey.
Now during day one official word out of the Detroit camp stated that the Pistons have acquired long time Clipper Elton Brand . Brand although some say has lost a step or two still had a great year averaging nearly 23 points 11 boards and 2 blocks a game...
The Pistons owner wasnt lying when he said hes looking for short term leadership. AP Report is says that brand has Signed a 1 Yr Max deal worth approximately 20.6 million.
I called Brands agent after brand was not able to be reached for comment and he said that Elton was ecstatic to come back to the Eastern Conference and that he truly relishes the idea of being the leader and role module on this very young Pistons team... Brands agent also said that Elton just wants to win... He could have received a longer contract but he wants to see whats out there in the future but for now just wants to play on a team that he feels can truly contend and that he feels that this is a team that can contend.
After talking with Elton Brands Agent I received a phone call from Detroit Pistons Owner/GM/President Mr Garvey and he said....
"IBrina ill keep this short. We got exactly who we wanted for THIS SEASON. We talked with three guys to gage there interest. #1 was Elton... We love his character and charisma and his abuility to produce. We talked with J ONeal but he was saying that he would prefer to stay in the warm weather city that is Miami but he would listen to any offer we mad and we talked with Tyrus Thomas. Thomas was looking for a 2 yr contract worth just more then we were willing to offer and Brand Jumped at the idea of coming here. We told him he would stay a starter and that he would be a main key in developing this young team."
Here at the paper we couldnt be happier then to have signed Elton Brand on day one of Free Agency.

Jermain ONeal RE-Signs with the Miami Heat. Today on day one of the FA Period Jermain ONeal has signed a one yr contract worth 20.9 million. Oneal Entertained many offers including a Max offer from the pistons supposedly but ultimately resigned with the heat.
Oneal had a bit of an off yr last yr avg under 18 ppg but was still a key cog in the middle helping the Heat to the playoffs. Oneals contract of 1 yr at just under 21 mil is the Largest single yr contract THIS OFFSEASON so far.
O'Neal left this comment with the AP...
"Im not ready to give up on Miami and i look foward to playing here next yr. I think our core is very very good and with a few key moves i think we will be right there in the east thats why i resigned here not because of the money that was offered."

Pair of PGs Sign to new Teams....
Baron Davis found a new home on a team that Desperately need a Vet PG. Baron Davis Signs 3 yr contract worth just over 18 mil TOTAL with the Sacramento Kings
Davis at approx 6 mil per season after averaging 20 points 6 brds (for a pg) and 8 ast. He should be a great role module for his newly acquired kids but if he starts to age it wont destroy his cap....
This may be the best FA value signing yet...
the other PG that has reportedly signed with the golden state warriors is....
Allen Iverson... Iverson signed a 1 Yr deal worth 11.6 million with the Golden State Warriors after they lost out on resigning Baron Davis...
Iverson may be a bit of a rent-a-player mainly cause The warriors brass has openly said that they dont feel Drew Lavendar is ready to step into the starting role.
Iverson at 35 yrs of age still can be considered a bargin considering he still averaged 23 point and 9 ast a game... He alone COULD help keep playoff hopes alive for the warriors.
Iverson was quoted as saying..... "Im not getting any younger and Denver was looking a different direction. GS is offering me a chance to LEAD there team and thats the role i want... i want to take my team to the championship not be a third or fourth wheel... We were really close there a few times but its time for me to move on..."

The defending champs Sure up there Foward spots....
Tyrus Thomas and Paul Milsap sign identical free agent deals with the Blazers. 2 Yrs 5 million per year total of ten Million to each player.
Milsap's deal to us here at the AP feel that it may be a bit rich for a Back Up SF to one of the best young kids in the game in Walker. But Thomas's deal was a bit more shocking... We have word that he was blown away but the blazers management and loved there desire to win... Thomas agent said he just wants to win... Thats why were here.
It was found out through some investigative research that he had been offered as much as 2.25 million more a season to go play for another team but his desire to win was so strong that he couldnt pass up the opportunity to play for the defending champs even if he is playing behind the NBL's league MVP in greg Oden.
Congrats to the Blazers for filling the whole at two different spots on day one as well as any other GM that signed to fill any needs of there own.

Day two Free Agency
The biggest deals of the day go to Shaun Livingston re-signing for around 11.2 million a year with the Clippers and Rudy Gay being signed to a 5 year deal around 12 million per season and then instantly being shipped away for The Matrix.... That could be a Huge trade. Sacramento having there SF already acquired a top notch PF for there playoff push while basically only giving up a HUGE contract that they would have had for the next 5 yrs.
Many other servicable players signed mostly one and two yr deals with new teams.... these included Corey Maggette leaving for the 76ers and Ricky Davis moving onto the Hawks.
2010 182 Clippers Sign PG Shaun Livingston for $33,744,000 over 3 years.

Day Three Free Agency
The BIG signings seem to be not quite there today but there were a couple Veteran PG and two Centers of note that were signed...
Mike Bibby turned down more money too resign with the Bucks and Andre Miller signed a 1 year contract to fill in as a key back up with the Pistons. Both players have grown into there respective reserve roles.
the 76ers made yet another big splash bringing in Zydrunas Ilgauskas for around 5.7 mil per for two yrs to sure up its center spot and Darko has signed with the defending champs where hes really going to fight for any minutes that he were to receive.
2010 183 Nuggets Sign PF Wayne Simien for $4,500,000 over one year.
2010 183 Bucks Sign PG Mike Bibby for $2,500,000 over one year.
2010 183 76ers Sign C Zydrunas Ilgauskas for $11,434,279 over 2 years.
2010 183 Trail Blazers Sign C Darko Milicic for $5,000,000 over one year.
2010 183 Pistons Sign PG Andre Miller for $4,000,000 over one year.
2010 183 Raptors Sign SG Bryce Taylor for $540,850 over one year.

Day 4 Free Agency
Warriors sign Kyle Korver to a 1 year $778,350 deal
Lakers sign Hedo Turkoglu to a 1 year 1.0M deal
Spurs sign Drew Gooden to a MLE
Sonics sign Lamar Odom to a MLE
Heat sign Gabriel Pruitt to a 2 year 7.39M deal
Warriors sign Al Harrington to a 2 year 12.0M deal
Grizzlies sign Vince Carter to a 2 year 22.88M
Finally some more very big names find some new homes. Vince Carter was probably the biggest name to sign anew contract at just under 11.5 mil per yr for 2 yrs. The grizzlies probably mostly needed a SF while only having Rookie Patrick Christopher there so bringing in VC if he can move over to SF would sure up that whole and that would also bring another veteran presence.
Al Harrington at 6 mil seems a bit overkill on the GSWs with 3 not exciting but capable Centers a great PF and decent to good SF with playing time. Will see how it works out.
Oden and Gooden are both good players still and could start on alot of teams... If they still get PT for the costs of just MLEs they can both be steals at this point.

Day 5
2010 185 Lakers Sign PG Chauncey Billups for $1,000,000 over one year.
2010 185 Warriors Sign SG Stephen Jackson for $1,000,000 over one year.
2010 185 Hawks Sign PG Earl Watson for $1,200,000 over one year.
2010 185 Nets Sign C Chris Wilcox for $2,670,097 over one year.
2010 185 Raptors Sign C Joel Przybilla for $1,000,000 over one year.
2010 185 Spurs Sign PG Jamaal Tinsley for $1,200,000 over one year.
2010 185 Cavaliers Sign C Glen Davis for $9,930,000 over 3 years.
2010 185 Raptors Sign C Jamaal Magloire for $1,000,000 over one year.
2010 185 Magic Sign SG Rashad McCants for $2,400,000 over 2 years.
2010 185 Sonics Sign PF Milovan Rakovic for $565,850 over one year.
2010 185 Kings Sign C Ben Wallace for $4,000,000 over one year.
2010 185 Nuggets Sign C Paul Davis for $1,200,000 over one year.
On this last day there were many more big relatively cheep signings. Big ben Wallace signed a 1 yr deal with the Kings to sure up there defense and rebounding as well as another big man signing with the Cavs in Glen Davis for around 3.5 per yr.... Those were the biggest per yr contracts signed and both additions should help a fair amount for there respective teams.
Billups can be a key reserve for the Lakers and at 1 Mil thats a steal considering he was offered some where in the range of 3 to 5 mil from Detroit and he was originally asking for around 10 Mil per before the end of the season... Steven Jackson can also score in bunches and if he gets PT in GS then again 1 mil is quite a bargain.
